    It was. The town started out as a trading post at that location on the south bank in 1901. By 1907, gold had been discovered nearby, and the town exploded. Between cutting trees for lumber for the buildings, for firewood for heat, as well as firewood for the sternwheelers, there would have been few trees left standing in the immediate area of town.
