More Hockey

Nanooks 2013 BAGR

A great game at the Carlson Center last night in front of a very enthusiastic crowd. In an evenly matched game, Alaska and Western Michigan tied after OT, with Alaska winning the shootout 1-0, giving Alaska it’s 4th Goal Rush title.
How even was it? Final score: 3-3. Shots on goal: 33-32 in favor of WMU. Blocked shots: 22-21, WMU. Both teams had one power play goal. WMU scored a go ahead goal with 1:40 left in the third period, only to have Alaska even the score 30 secs later. It really was a great game.

Freshman goalie Davis Jones made his second start for the Nanooks, earning his second win and all tournament honors. Senior forward Cody Kunyk of Alaska was the tournament MVP.

Next up for Alaska is Mercyhurst, and we go on campus to the Patty Center next weekend for that series. I don’t remember the last time a regular season game was played on Patty Center ice. I’m guessing pre-CCHA.

D-1 Hockey Returns

Atkinson with puck vs Denver

The #12 ranked Denver Pioneers came to the Carlson Center last night to take on the Alaska Nanooks in the second game of the Alaska Goal Rush tournament. The Nooks played Denver tough, but fell behind 2-0 in the second period. A goal late in period two halved the deficit. That was the first goal Denver goalie Sam Brittain had given up this year, and the first goal in 193 mins 49 secs going back to last year. Thankfully, Alaska wasn’t finished.
Cody Kunyk, showing great patience with the puck, moved in toward the net firing a wrist shot that beat Brittain for a PPG in the third to tie things up at 2.
Then with 25 seconds left in OT, Gerrick Perry, with a phenomenal effort, scored the game winner.
Freshman Davis Jones, in his very first game for Alaska, played extremely well in net, getting his first collegiate win.
A big win against a ranked team.

In game one, the Western Michigan Broncos beat the Alaska-Anchorage Seapuppies 6-2 in front of a very sparse crowd. Only a small handful of Anchorage fans made the trip to support a team that was off to its best start in 17 years.

Tonight it’s Alaska vs Western Michigan for the tournament title.

Getting Close to Hockey

John Mayasich

We are 8 days away from the official start of the college hockey season. This weekend’s slate of exhibition games don’t count in any standings.

The photo, courtesy of Golden Gopher Hockey, is of John Mayasich, three time All-American and the all time leading scorer for the Golden Gophers. In 111 games played, Mayasich scored 144 goals and added 154 assists. #8 is the only jersey ever retired by the program.

Mayasich was also a member of the 1956 Silver Medal and 1960 Gold Medal winning Olympic teams.

Drop the puck.
