Alaska became the 49th U.S. state on January 3, 1959. The Alaska Statehood Act was signed by President Eisenhower on July 7, 1958, which would allow the Great Land entry to the union the following January.

I keep forgetting how recent the current shape of the US is. Which is next? Puerto Rico? Columbia?

I would think Puerto Rico would be the next territory to become a state, especially after the Hurricane Maria aftermath. Whether it will be a priority with this session of Congress, is an open question, however.
