Making the rounds

Cpl. Shaun Begg moves in on goal

I know this picture is making the internet rounds, but it’s hockey and we are in the middle of the NCAA playoffs, and I’m bouncing of the walls to get to a game in person, so…

Called the “most Canadian photo ever”, which is very hard to argue with, Cpl. Shaun Begg of the Canadian Mounted Police had flown into Shamrock Lake in the Purcell Mountain region of British Columbia. Dressed in full uniform, plus the standard winter gear of ice skates and hockey stick, Begg moves in on goal. It’s a tough angle, but he is a Mountie after all.

Congrats to the Minnesota Gopher Women’s hockey team on winning their third National Championship in the last four years by defeating Harvard 4-1.

Ridder Arena was the place to be on Sunday afternoon.

Battle at The Joe

Minnesota vs Michigan

This Minnesota senior class has won four consecutive regular season championships, been to two Frozen Fours and one National Championship game, but they have not won a tournament championship. It’s their last chance, and the Michigan Wolverines stand in their way.

The season series has each team with two wins. This is the rubber match. It should be a very entertaining game at Joe Louis. The winner is guaranteed a spot in the National Tourney, and Michigan has to win to get in.

The University of Minnesota Golden Gophers defeated the University of Michigan Wolverines 4-2 in the Big Ten Championship game. The victory gives Minnesota the automatic bid into the NCAA tournament, and the loss knocks Michigan out of the field for the third year in a row after 22 consecutive appearances.

The Gophers will move on to the Northeastern Regional in Manchester, NH to face the Bulldogs of Duluth. It will be the fifth meeting this year between UM & UMD.

So the Minneapolis StarTribune is saying that there are no D1 hockey teams west of Denver?

Get your head out of your puck!

The upset polar bear comes courtesy of the Alaska Nanook Hockey page located in Fairbanks, Alaska. A community just slightly west of Denver. We won’t even get into the number of years that Minnesota played Anchorage in the old-WCHA…

A Little More on Old Mariucci

A Flashback Friday Edition:

As the Gophers face Michigan State at Mariucci Arena tonight, here’s one more view at the Old Barn. Congrats to Nick Lehr on his first collegiate win last night in place of All-American Adam Wilcox. Let’s avoid that first period scare tonight, however.

Scoreboard Wall

Here are two more shots that give a clearer picture of the sloped wall above the goal at one end of the arena.

Sloped ceiling at Mariucci

This is the wall that divides the basketball side from the hockey side of Williams Arena. The sloped ceiling above the goal at this end, is due to the seating on the other side for basketball. As far as I know, it was the only rink in the country with such a quirky feature.

Goldy’s Perch

Goldy's Perch

At the opposite end of the “cubby hole” was a high bank of windows, and right below that is Goldy’s Perch.

Goldy's Perch 2

The Gopher mascot would spend a lot of time up there by the “NE” section, which was the student section. The best part would be seeing Goldy up there on his perch, swinging his broom, while the school band played the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” after a series sweep.

Here’s a video that a Gopher fan took during the final hockey season at Old Mariucci. Notice the “clean” boards. There are very few adverts on the boards, and even center ice is clean with only “Mariucci Arena” imprinted on the ice. What a different era.

A very special thanks goes out to gopherhockeyhistory.com who took the video and photos before the Gophers moved into their new arena. It brought back a lot of good memories. Kudos!

35th Anniversary

USA beats the Soviets 4-3 in semifinals

It was 35 years ago, when the United States Olympic hockey team beat the Soviets 4-3 in the 1980 semi-finals. The Soviet team was heavily favored, in fact they had pummeled the U.S. team 10-3 just two weeks earlier. Dave Anderson wrote of the U.S. chances in the New York Times the day before the big game: “Unless the ice melts, or unless the United States team or another team performs a miracle, as did the American squad in 1960, the Russians are expected to easily win the Olympic gold medal for the sixth time in the last seven tournaments.”

The Soviets were the best team of that entire era, and arguably, by a large margin, but it would be a mistake to categorize the U.S. team as lacking talent. Of the 20 players suiting up for Team U.S.A., 13 would go on to play in the NHL, with three of those playing in over 1000 professional games: Neal Broten (1099); Mike Ramsey (1070); and Dave Christian (1009).
At least five members of the Soviet team would also go on to play in the NHL.

Team U.S.A. would meet Finland for the gold medal. Without a win in the finals, the U.S. would not have medaled at all. The U.S. would beat Finland 4-2 for the gold.

The Soviets would crush Sweden 9-2 for the silver.

Bob Suter's jersey raised at Herb Brooks Arena

Surviving members of the 1980 Olympic hockey team were in Lake Placid this weekend to commemorate the victory 35 years ago.
Two members of the team are no longer with us: coach Herb Brooks who died in 2003, and defenseman Bob Suter who died this past September. Suter’s jersey was raised to the roof of the Lake Placid ice rink, now named the Herb Brooks Arena, where it all happened.

Hockey Update:

Gophers Win

The Gophers shutout Michigan on Saturday for a weekend sweep. Minnesota is now tied with the Wolverines for the B1G lead. It was Adam Wilcox’s 11th career shutout and fourth of the year. Minnesota travels to Penn State next weekend.

And Alaska defeats #1 ranked Minnesota State 3-1 with all three Nanook goals coming in the third period. Alaska takes 3 out of 4 points for the weekend, and also wins the season series against MSU with a 2-1-1 record. That was some damn fine hockey at the Carlson Center this weekend. Alaska is off next weekend.

Oh Oh… Is it Chocolate Marketing Day already?

Goldy V-tine

“What are you doing tonight”
Me: Going to a hockey game.
“But it’s Valentine’s Day!”
Me: Do you want to go to a hockey game?
“No!”
Me: They do have a kissing cam during the second intermission.
“You’re hopeless.”

Happy V-Day

Golden Gopher Hockey Venues

Over the years, the University of Minnesota has played in a lot of venues. The first intercollegiate hockey game the U of M played was in 1895. Those games were played at Athletic Park in Minneapolis. By the 1903 season, the Gophers were playing on Como Lake in St Paul. I believe 1903 is also the first year Minnesota played the University of Wisconsin.
The University’s Board of Regents did not officially fund a varsity hockey program until 1921.

By 1923, the University’s hockey team was playing in the Hippodrome at the Minnesota State Fair grounds. When the Hippodrome was built in 1906, it was the largest indoor ice sheet in the world at 270 feet by 119 feet.

The "Hipp"
The Original “Hipp”

The Original “Hipp”, as it was known, was a beautiful and massive amphitheater that sustained the rink by leaving the doors and windows open to let the natural air freeze the ice.

Interestingly, it was also the home of the St Paul Athletic Club, which won the MacNaughton Cup in 1915, and were runner’s up in 1922 and 1923.

Minnesota would continue to play in the Hippodrome off and on until 1934. During WWII, the “Hipp” was converted into a propeller plant. While under government control, the historic Hippodrome was severely damaged and declared unsafe. The building was torn down in 1946.

By 1925, the main home of Gopher hockey was the Minneapolis Arena. The team continued to play some games at the state fair grounds until 1934 and at the St Paul Auditorium from 1932 – 1950.

Things really started to change for the program by 1950. Williams Arena opened on campus in 1928. In 1950, “The Barn”, as the old arena is affectionately known, received its first major renovation. The building was divided with the larger section to be the home of the basketball team, and a smaller section to become the new, on campus home of the hockey team.

In 1952, John Mariucci would become the coach of Golden Gopher hockey. It would be Mariucci who would take the program to new levels and cement the program’s identity. It was Mariucci who really started the tradition of Minnesota kids playing on Minnesota’s ice. He would coach the team through the 1966 season.

In 1985, the hockey side of Williams Arena was renamed Mariucci Arena after the long time coach. I absolutely loved attending games at Williams Arena/Old Mariucci, both as a young kid with my Dad and as a student at The U. It was a unique rink, a very intimate setting, and very loud for the home team. It also had the strangest little cubby hole at one end. As a kid, I always wondered if the net minder got claustrophobic down there.

In 1993 the hockey team moved into the New Mariucci Arena, which is across the street from Williams. Old Mariucci is now the Sports Pavilion. New Mariucci is a beautiful hockey rink, and arguably one of the nicest in the nation, but I’m glad I experienced the quirks and history of Williams.
