Non-Wing Sprint Cars

Non-wing sprint cars was a new experience for me, and I had an absolute blast at the Bloomington Speedway. It’s a great little 1/4 mile track, and there was a tremendous crowd out for the races as well. I really enjoyed the non-wing racing, and we had some great racing going on Friday night for the opening of the KISS series.

Fifty-four cars started the night, with twenty-two of them in the feature. 30 laps from green to checker with no stoppage. It was great! I had never seen that many laps go without a yellow flag. I could get hooked if they ran these cars on a track near Fairbanks. Brady Short took the win, with Bobby East and Jon Stanbrough taking second & third.

Jungle Park Speedway

I roadtripped out east with Tom & Larry to camp out at some state parks and take in a couple of sprint car races. Our first track was the remains of the Historic Jungle Park Speedway, which ran (off & on) from 1926 to 1960, with its peak being in the 1930’s & 40’s.
The first three photos are of the track in its hayday, and the last three I took over the weekend. One section of the tiered grandstands remains, and you can still see the bank of the old track which is now covered with grass.
Jungle Park is in Indiana near Turkey Run State Park, which itself is worth a hike-through.

Moraine View State Park

We stopped late Thursday night north of Le Roy, IL at Moraine View State Park. We set up camp in the dark and awoke the next morning surprised to see a lake right by our tent site. At one point we had three hen turkeys run in front of our tents followed shortly after by two toms.

Back in K-ville

It was opening night at Knoxville Raceway last night. The first time I had viewed a race from the Second Floor of the Museum since the end of the ’07 Season.
It was a beautiful night for racing, which was a welcome surprise from the week-long call for rain. I wish I could say that it was a thrilling night of racing, but the track conditions called for a lot of “follow the leader”, which put at least two to sleep on the second floor. The Powers of the Second Floor have always kept a tight ship, which deterred the masses from throwing the evening into total Chaos. Those Volunteers really are a group of Unsung Heroes.

Prior to the race, there was a classic car show at The Raceway. The participants were allowed to drive around the track at “intermission”. Damn, I couldn’t help but wonder if they would have let me enter The Rover into the show, because I had this great desire to drive the truck around that oval.
Lost opportunities can haunt a man.

Danny Lasoski won his 94th race at Knoxville, taking the 410 Main. Robbie Wolfgang, who had a nice & vocal following on the Second Floor, ran a strong 6th. Davey Heskin, the St Michael, MN native who won the B Feature to get into the A, had a tough job due to starting back in the pack, and finished 11th.
Russ Hall and Carson McCarl both won their first race at Knoxville, taking the 360 and 305 respectively. I heard today that Carson may be the youngest winner at Knoxville; he’s only 16 years old.

It was definitely fun to be back in Knoxville, seeing both the racing and some old friends again.
