I Have to Keep Moving…

HellHound

“I got to keep movin’, I’ve got to keep movin’, blues fallin’ down like hail, blues fallin’ down like hail
Umm-mm-mm-mm, blues fallin’ down like hail, blues fallin’ down like hail
And the day keeps on worrin’ me, there’s a hellhound on my trail, hellhound on my trail, hellhound on my trail.”
—Robert Johnson

In what is shaping up to be my busiest summer on record, all I can do is keep moving. I’ve never seen a season shape up like this one, and the calls keep coming in.

I’ve been plumbing for the past two days, which usually puts me in a foul mood. It doesn’t help that plumbers are all sadists, and I’ve come into a situation 40 years after the original install, with the Ghost Plumber chuckling at me from the attic. I replaced a shower valve that was installed through a stud, and I swear that the stud grew around the valve like an oak tree grows around barbed wire.
I’ll be installing tile the next 2-3 days, which may be good for the soul, if a tad hard on the knees. On the plus side, everything has been torn out, so I’m starting from scratch.

I could not find the artist’s name who created the Hound of the Baskervilles above, but kudos to whoever they are.

My favorite bonus question: “Do you know any Eskimonians?”

It’s amazing how wonderful +5 degrees can feel after you’ve been hovering around -30F for a few days.

A Thanksgiving Flashback

Les Nessman Turkeys Away

“It’s a helicopter, and it’s coming this way. It’s flying something behind it, I can’t quite make it out, it’s a large banner and it says, uh – Happy… Thaaaaanksss… giving! … From … W … K … R… P!! No parachutes yet. Can’t be skydivers… I can’t tell just yet what they are, but – Oh my God, Johnny, they’re turkeys!! Johnny, can you get this? Oh, they’re plunging to the earth right in front of our eyes! One just went through the windshield of a parked car! Oh, the humanity! The turkeys are hitting the ground like sacks of wet cement! Not since the Hindenburg tragedy has there been anything like this!”

As God is my witness...%22

Happy Thanksgiving

Sodium Free

Parks Hwy S. of DNP

“Road salt is like the automotive equivalent of chain smoking unfiltered cigarettes and guzzling Jack Daniels… might make you feel better for awhile, but there’s shit going on inside that you don’t want to see.”
—World Wide Web Wisdom

I spotted that quote while searching LR forums looking for transmission information. It reminded me that, luckily, Fairbanks does not use salt on our roads. They do use sand, gravel, rocks and boulders, which explains why we have more cracked windshields per capita than any other state. There is nothing quite like the feeling of the slow motion sight of a boulder coming at your newly replaced windshield from the tires of a decked out 4×4 in the oncoming lane.

Above priceless.

Guilty as Charged…

“It isn’t that we wouldn’t live anywhere but Alaska, but that living in Alaska makes us unfit to live anywhere else.”

Return of Dragnet

From the Unalaska Police Blotter:

8 July
1340 – MVA Damage – Minor damage but no injuries ensued when one driver backed into another in the Grand Aleutian Hotel parking lot. Driver #1 was cited for Limitations on Backing.

1528 – Animal – Protest about perpetual problems with pets pooping on plots other than their own.

2259 – Animal – Caller reported a dead cat in the roadway. An officer responded and found no dead feline, only a motley collection of Bald Eagles.

Turistas

I don’t think I’ve done a post on the tourists this season. My sincerest apologies…

From The Skagway News:

1) “I want to go swimming with the orcas … you know, like the dolphins in Florida. How come they don’t have that here?”

2)”An older tourist walks into Fairway Market and says to the senior checker, ‘Do you people have deodorant?’

“Checker: ‘Ball type?’

“Man (blushing), ‘Oh my, no, it’s for my underarms.’ “

I think that a new reality show “Swimming with the Orcas” would make quite the bloody splash.

1155 – Environmental – Two callers reported 20-40 eagles feasting on discarded fish fillets conveniently left in the back of a pickup truck, and the sheer number of eagles made it difficult for other drivers to safely access vehicles parked nearby. An officer scared the eagles away and advised the owner of the pickup to properly dispose of the fish.
