I have not been out to Ice Alaska of late, but with the warm temps, I’m sure most of the carvings are now stumps of ice sitting in puddles. In fact, the past two days have seen temps stay above freezing. That is the first time since recording began, that Fairbanks has seen consecutive days in March stay above 32F degrees.

This carving won first place in the two-person carving competition. The artists, Junichi Nakamura & Hiroaki Kimura are from Japan.
I must admit, it is the cutest dragon I’ve seen in Fairbanks.

Another multi-block contestant. This carving is modeled after Ben Eielson’s Curtiss JN-4D, which now hangs from the ceiling of the Fairbanks International Airport.

The view from snowshoes
We had roughly five inches of snow fall Sunday night, and close to eight fell the week before. I could hear the call of the snowshoes on Monday, so I strapped them on and ventured out into the Back 400. We had some snow out there, and my previous paths were completely covered. Still, it was a beautiful day to be out breaking a new trail.
