Madison, Wisconsin

The original plan was to take in a women’s game at LaBahn Arena Saturday afternoon, but the game was sold out, and we were forced to run with a makeshift brewery tour instead.

On Sunday, the Badger Women were once again hosting the SCSU Huskies, so we were able to take in another hockey game. The first time either of us had been to a women’s game.

LaBahn seats 2273, and the Badgers have 9 sell outs this year at the rink. The game was all Wisconsin, with the Badgers dominating the entire game. Emily Clark scored twice, and Ann-Renee Desbiens had her 14th shutout of the year, as Wisconsin won easily 3-0. It was Destines’ 31st career shutout.

The Alaska Nanooks were flying down to Madison to play the Wisconsin Badgers, so The Curator & I ventured northeast to take in a weekend of hockey.

The Kohl Center, one of the top rinks in college hockey, opened in 1998. The Kohl is also one of the largest arenas in D-1, seating over 15,300 for hockey. Badger fans are some of the most active in the college ranks, and the atmosphere at any Badger sporting event is high octane. The UW Band rarely stops to take a breath.

UA Nanooks vs UW Badgers

Friday was the night for the Nanooks to get an upset. During period one, Alaska could have easily scored 3 goals, but instead they trailed Wisconsin 1-0 on a goal by Corbin McGuire. Missed opportunities would haunt Alaska, and Wisconsin would pounce the ones that came their way.

In the second period, Tyler Morley struck first with a short-handed goal, but Ryan Wagner responded immediately with a PPG to keep the Badger lead at one. Wisconsin would score two more in the period and Alaska one for a 4-2 Badger lead. Tyler Morley would score his second on the night, but that was all the Nooks could muster and Wisconsin held on for a 4-3 win.

On Saturday we were joined by another member of the Frozen Foursome. The first two periods showcased some really even-played hockey between the two teams, and the score was 1-1 after two. In the third period, the Badgers had Alaska on their heels, and the damage came quickly. The Badgers would score four in the first 11:43, with the Nanooks managing to get one past Matt Jurusik in the period. A 5-2 Badger win.

Still Number 1!

Welcome to Fairbanks!

24/7 Wall Street, did a study to determine the coldest cities in the United States. In spite of the funky weather we have been experiencing lately, Fairbanks, Alaska retained its rightful spot as the Coldest City in America!

Take that Boston. Impostor after our Winter Mojo.

Alas, the data used in the study was taken from the years 1981 – 2010. So New England still has a chance to wrest the title away from us if they remain persistent.

Now the data for Fairbanks:
Average monthly minimum temperature: -16.9 F
Average monthly maximum temperature: 52.3 F
Average annual snowfall: 66.1 in.

Rounding out the Top 5:
2) Grand Forks, NoDak
Average monthly minimum temperature: -3.1 F
Average monthly maximum temperature: 56.3 F

3)Fargo, NoDak
Average monthly minimum temperature: 0.1 F
Average monthly maximum temperature: 59.5 F

4)Williston, NoDak
Average monthly minimum temperature: 0.1 F
Average monthly maximum temperature: 55.8 F

5)Duluth, MN
Average monthly minimum temperature: 1.5 F
Average monthly maximum temperature: 55.4 F

Minneapolis/St Paul made it up to #12. Green Bay, WI was a very pedestrian #16. Waterloo, IA #17. Anchorage, AK landed at a balmy #22.

Graduation

UW-Madison

My classes through the University of Wisconsin ended on Sunday, and I’m happy to say I passed all my tests. I have earned a Statement of Accomplishment! Which I’m sure is one step up from a Gold Star… maybe even two steps. I was hoping for a Badger pelt, but I think one has to take a series of courses before you earn that. Maybe that trapping class…

The course was extremely well done, and I have to give credit to UW and the instructors for putting together such a well thought out and designed course.

A side element to the videos, lectures and reading material that did not have a direct bearing on my grade was the forum discussions that took place online. I simply didn’t have time to do much more than occasionally look into them, but they were lively discussions from what I saw.

Kudos to UW for formulating a course on hunting, wildlife management, conservation, and tying it into the larger picture of Leopold’s Land Ethic, as we are immersed in the challenges of this 21st century.

This doesn’t make me a Badger

Aldo Leopold bow hunting

The University of Wisconsin – Madison has a free online course on hunting and conservation which is centered on Aldo Leopold and his writings. I was intrigued, and spontaneously signed up once the course was announced, and now it starts on Monday. I haven’t taken any classes in ages, and have far too much going on as it is right now, but I’m still going to plod through and see what it all is about. All one has to do is throw “Leopold” out there, and I’m in. In fact, I think the last course I took involved Leopold here at the University of Alaska, and that one was not even close to being free.

The general course aim:
“The overall goal of this course is to engage you in learning about how wildlife management and recreational hunting play a role in the evolving face of conservation.”

On the plus side, I already have the text book, and have read it many, many times.

Wish me luck, and remember:

Don't be a Badger

Battle for The Axe

Border Battle

It’s the longest running rivalry in Division 1 football: Minnesota vs Wisconsin. This year, not only is Paul Bunyan’s Axe at stake, but a trip to the Big Ten Championship game as well.

The 124th meeting since 1890 takes place today at Camp Randall in Madison.

Beat Wisconsin

Kendall Hockey Classic

– Anchorage –

Alaska had faced Wisconsin 7 times previously, and had lost all seven, but the teams had not faced each other since 1993.

Friday night, the Nanooks played a great defensive game, giving up only 14 shots on goal, in pulling out a 1-0 win over the Badgers.

Anchorage also looked good in a 3-1 win over Maine.

Not a bad night for the two Alaska programs.

Top Brew States

Wisconsin over Iowa?

My main interest in this post, besides the listing of craft brews, is that one friend will like the above picture, and another will probably stop watching the blog for a few days.

At any rate, Thrillist ranked each state based on their local beers. Mississippi came in dead last at #50. Iowa was #34, with Toppling Goliath coming in as their top beer. Alaska #25, with Midnight Sun Berserker & Anchorage Bitter Monk taking top honors. Texas was #20, with venerable Shiner getting mentioned as well as Jester King & Saint Arnold. Minnesota came in at #16, with Dangerous Man Brewing, Summit, and several others getting mentioned. Wisconsin #7 (which should surprise no one) with New Glarus’ Spotted Cow taking top honors. Oregon topped out the list.

Come on Iowa, you’re lagging behind.
