Churchill’s Rover

Churchill & his Series I

Churchill's Series I Today

Churchill's Wide Seat

A Series I Land Rover, that was custom made for Winston Churchill and given to the former Prime Minister for his 80th birthday, will go on the auction block in October.

The vintage Series I was fitted with an extra wide passenger seat for Churchill’s ample… umm… load, for when he was ferried about his 300 acre Chartwell estate. I realize that the man was a heralded statesman, but making the driver sit on a “jump seat”?! I’m sorry, but that’s just wrong. But kudos to Rover for using a “spare” part from the back of the truck… very frugal after the war and all. I do love this part: 58 years later, this VIP Rover has only 12,000 miles on it. I put more than 12K on mine in the first two years of ownership. Hell, I’ve done trips in mine that were longer than that.

15 years after Churchill’s death, his family sold the old Rover for 150 pounds. The car will go under the hammer on October 20 at Cheffins auction house in Sutton, Cambs. If you’re interested, you will need at least 60,000 pounds to drive it home.

Skipping Work Due to a Lack of Interest

James Dean with Rollei

A heat wave has hit Interior Alaska. Temps have been in the thirties much of the weekend, which forced me to let the fire go out in the woodstove on Friday. A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect, due to freezing rain and eventually up to six inches of snow. Freezing rain in Fairbanks in January? Crazy talk.

I had an appointment in the middle of the day, which sadly forced me to empty my theoretical dayplanner. While in town, I spotted a young guy taking a photo with an old Rolleiflex. I think the last time I met someone else shooting a Rollei, I was in London and I don’t think I’ve ever seen one in use in Fairbanks. I stopped to talk to him, even though I figured he must be a tourist. I couldn’t think of any reason a local would be taking a photo of a drive-thru coffee hut with a 120 Shooter. Turns out he was from Germany, and his girlfriend soon joined us to talk cameras, travel and Alaska. They were heading up the Haul Road, in spite of the weather. I wished them good luck, and told them to at least make it to Coldfoot or they would regret it for the rest of their days.

The encounter reminded me that I really need to send my Rollei in for repairs. No one remains in Fairbanks to work on the camera, but I know of shops in both Minneapolis and San Francisco that will happily give it a new lease on life.

Statehood

Alaska Statehood Stamp

At the risk if irritating any Alaska Independence Party members that have happened to stumble upon this page, it was on this date in 1959 that Alaska became the 49th State.

After decades of fighting “the powers that be”, President Eisenhower signed the Alaska Statehood Act on 7 July 1958, which allowed Alaska to become a state on 3 January 1959.
