When in Yorkshire…

Land Rover for Hire

18 year old, Dan Petch has started Yorkshire Land Rover Hire, which will rent you a new Land Rover to tour Yorkshire. The vehicles all come with on board cameras and bike racks.

There is a threat to get into “glamping” as well as Land Rover hires, but until that happens I think it’s a great idea.

As the potential for The Godzilla El Niño looms over the equator this summer, I honestly believe there is only one question worth asking at this time:

How does this affect the winter travel plans of a certain Alaskan?

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is projecting a massive El Niño. Already, the bulge of warmer equatorial waters in the Pacific is larger than in 1997-98, which was the largest El Niño on record.

Where to go, what to do, how to stay dry?

These are the questions of our times.

Knoxville Nationals

Knoxville Raceway in Iowa is in the middle of its Big Week right now. The 55th running of the Knoxville Nationals is going on, and the video above is from the finish of the Capitani Classic, which ran on Sunday night.

If you’re into racing at all, the Nationals is an experience worth throwing on the bucket list. It’s quite the sprint car spectacle.

Cheers to my friends in Knoxville, especially those on the Second Floor of the HoF.

2015 Moves into 2nd Place

The 2015 Fire Season has seen the second most acres burned since records have been kept. At just over 5.08 million acres, 2015 lags behind only the very smokey year of 2004, when 6.6 million acres burned.
Interestingly, between 1950 and 1989 Alaska had only eight fire seasons with over one million acres burned. Since 1990, we’ve had eleven, including four seasons that saw over three million acres go up in flames. 2009 fell 50,000 acres short of three million.
In June, it looked like this summer would give 2004 a run for its money, but moisture and cooler temperatures since July have slowed the burning down somewhat. Although, there are numerous fires still active, including the 135,000 + acres Hughes fire near the Koyukuk River.
Now that we are well into August and the Brooks Range is expecting over 5″ of snow over the next couple of days, it looks like 2004 will remain safely atop the record book.
